BAYOU LA BATRE, Alabama - A man hired to clean up oil on the beach has the certificate needed -- but the certificate is not worth the paper its printed on.
Robert Cox of Bayou La Batre says he never took a class to learn how to pick up the oil.
He told News Five a week after working on Dauphin Island, he received a certificate saying he completed 40 hours of hazwoper training in Llouisiana.
Cox says it never happened.
"A lot of people here in Mobile that need work and they went through that company, and they're doing the same thing to them as they did to me. They're taking money out of their paychecks and they're having their hazwoper certificates to the company and all they're doing is just printing it out," said Robert Cox.
cox signed up for the classes through an independent company called Longpoint Environmental Training.
News Five contacted the company and owner Albert Diaz his company is not even registered in Alabama and believes someone is forging certificates with its name on it.

  1. That they wear hard hats to clean up oil on a beach would be comical if it weren't just so sad. It's all like some surrealist dark comedy. Thank you for your continued work in what I once thought to be one of the most beautiful areas on this planet.
